Give existing accounts a dedicated owner who is separate from new-business sales, build a schedule of contact that is not tied to selling, spread each relationship across several people on both sides, learn where each customer is trying to go, and measure year-over-year account growth as the primary retention metric. Retention improves when expanding existing accounts becomes a specific person’s job and gets a real metric attached to it.
